Six Places To Add Your Keywords To Optimize Your Pinterest Account
Already on Pinterest and have started pinning to help promote your blog, your freebie, your website, or your business? Let me help you in optimizing your Pinterest account.
As you probably know by now, Pinterest is NOT a social media platform. Unlike Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram views, clicks, and engagement won’t come right after you post any pin or any content. Since Pinterest functions more like Google, your pins will show up when people search for keywords (well, they can also see them on their smartfeed but let’s focus on search).
So what does this mean for you? You need to research those keywords and put them in different places to help your pin turn up in search results. Aside from your pins, there are also other places where you should be adding your keywords in. If you need a guide on how to search for keywords for your Pinterest account, check out my post below!
Where to place your keywords on your Pinterest Account?
1. Your Profile
Let’s get started with your profile. You need to put keywords in your profile too!
Why?
Audiences might search for accounts related to your niche, so adding those keywords in will be very beneficial. Don’t just slap on keywords that won’t make sense when put together. Create a bio that explains what you do that has keywords in them.
2-3. Your board and your board description
Next up? Your board and your board description.
When setting up your board, you will only be given the option to name the board. But, don’t stop there! Make sure you also add a keyword-rich board description.
Hold up!
I don’t mean just adding the keywords without it making sense. Still remember that people might visit your boards, so it still has to make sense. Create a description that makes sense that has keywords in them. After creating your board, you can see the guide below on how to add your board description.
Now, after you click on the three dots, click on edit board, and this pop-up will appear. After this you can add your description.
Again, don’t just copy and paste keywords you have researched. Make it make sense for your audience and Pinterest.
You’re probably wondering why adding keywords to your boards are important. The thing is, Pinterest uses those descriptions to help it’s algorithm understand what you are pinning about. So help give their algorithm clues by adding those keywords.
4. Your Pin Visual
Pinterest is a visual search engine - so it pays to add keywords on your Pin visuals too! It might be tempting to just use the same blog title or just any other title for your pin headline - but - add a keyword or two there. The algorithm scans this and it will help it understand what your pin is about too! As a sample, I created pins for a blog post about Idea Pins and you can see how I added keywords here and there on the pin visual too!
For my last blog post about idea pins and why it should be part of your Pinterest strategy, I created 15 pins. I made sure to add keywords on those pin visuals to help the algorithm understand what the pin is about. Those keywords helped increase the impressions of my pins and some of those keywords were:
Pinterest Strategy
Using Idea Pins
Idea Pins to promote your business
Engaged audience on Pinterest

5-6. Lastly, your pin title and your pin description
The last piece of the keyword puzzle? Your pin title and your pin description.
This is where pinners commonly place their keywords and here you can get creative. Just make sure that it is not just a copy-paste of your keywords. People would read that Pin Title and Pin Description before making a decision to click - so make sure both have keywords (and best if those are long-tail keywords).
