Target Market 101

In launching your business, one of the things you should focus on (I’m not even kidding about this) is defining your target audience.

I know, it can be such a big task to undertake especially if you don’t come from a marketing or sales background, but we can take it step-by-step. I promise you, it will be worth your time because it will help shape your social and content strategy.

Defining who you want to purchase your product will not just guide you in creating your strategy. It will also help you understand why they would even consider your service or your product.

The thing is, you cannot just launch a product and say it is for everybody. No! Even big brands would create this buyer persona because they want to know what message they would like to hear, how to efficiently reach them, and who they listen to.

As a small business, this is a smart move to make because you wouldn’t waste your time posting on social media platforms that are not applicable to your audience. If you also have money to spare, having a clear audience will also empower you to create ads that are catered to them.

So let’s start then?

After conceptualizing or creating the product you want to sell, list down all the benefits of your product. You will then have a bit of idea who will need that product the most.

What pain point does your product address?

For sure you already have a list of brands or individuals who offer the same product or services as yours. Take a look at who they are talking to and identify:

  1. Who are they talking to and who are their followers on Instagram?

  2. Are there any certain individuals they are not talking to yet?

Knowing the above you have to decide whether you will go for the same audience OR if you will cater to the underserved audience.

Go into the details of their demographics. Ask yourself:

  1. How old are they?

  2. What is their gender?

  3. If you are offering a location-based service or product - where are they from?

Now that you’ve got the basics covered, you are slowly having a better vision of who you want to target. This is already good but you need to dive deeper!

I know, you will possibly ask me, why do I need to go into that Denice? You see, this is where you will fully understand who they are. In this step, you will be able to identify fully how to talk to them and which platform you should use to reach them.

Some questions you should answer would be:

  1. What are they passionate about?

  2. What are they like, personality-wise?

  3. What is their current lifestyle like?

  4. What are their values and do they have opinions about certain things?

What next?

Now, you should have a semblance of what your target audience is like. You can even create a character and name that person to make it easier to visualize who they are. Your next step would be to identify what they would want to hear from you and which platforms they use.
