Pinterest Idea Pins: Should You Be Using It For Your Biz?
Heard about the latest kid on the Pinterest block - well not really - aka the Pinterest Idea Pins?
Originally called Story Pins, Idea Pins is the new addition to your usual static, carousel type, and video pins. But the question you might have is, is it worth spending time creating Idea Pins or should you just focus on your usual repertoire of pins?
Let’s discuss!
What are Pinterest Idea Pins?
If you’re new to Pinterest the easiest way for me to explain idea pins is that they are stories - but on Pinterest AND they don’t expire within 24 hours, unlike Instagram and Facebook stories.
But how do these idea pins get discovered?
You can see those idea pins when you tap on the creators you have followed
You can see them when you search for keywords (it’s still Pinterest so keywords still play an important role for this type of pin; or
You can see them when you visit someone’s profile
Should I Use Idea Pins for my Pinterest Biz Account?
The quick answer is yes!
From my experience handling different Pinterest accounts, it’s an important add on to your current Pinterest strategy. So let me give you a breakdown of the pros and cons of using Idea Pins!
Pros:
It is a great way to tell a story to your audience
Since it will allow you to use up to 20 images or video content (up to 60 seconds per video) combined you can share a story, a concept, or idea. If you have a lot of recipes, you can do video content with a step by step guide for it
It is a great way for you to showcase your offerings
If you are selling a collection, you can create an idea pin about that collection, if you are selling renovations or makeovers it is the perfect opportunity for you to tell a before and after story
It is being promoted more by Pinterest vs other types of pins
I have tried posting idea pins and I would see an uptick in impressions. My idea pins would get thousands of impressions while my regular pins would take a bit more time
It is a great way to start a conversation with your ideal audience
When they see your idea pins, they might be more engaged and want to see more, so they might go in check your profile see more, click on your site, or even follow you (because the last prompt is for users to follow you on Pinterest)
They take up the full screen
Like stories on other apps, when they tap on the idea pin you shared it will take over their full screen. Giving you a higher chance of engaging with your audience
They might help boost the impressions of your other pins
Still not 100% sure with this, but I have seen some of my pins and my clients’ pins get a bigger boost whenever we post an idea pin vs when we don’t. I also saw an increase in my overall metrics when I started posting at least one idea pin per week (78% increase on my engaged audience!)
Cons:
It doesn't allow you to have a link embedded
Yes you can add a link on the notes but it won’t be clickable - which can be annoying for those who have been using Pinterest for a long time and used to clicking/tapping pins to go to the content source
It can’t be scheduled just yet
Yes, like stories on other platforms you have to go in on the platform and post the idea pins - no scheduling yet through Pinterest or Tailwind itself
How To Create Idea Pins?
So, you’re probably wondering how you can create idea pins. There are two ways you can go about this.
Shoot videos and edit using the Pinterest mobile app - you can add stickers here, shoot video content, and edit
Create templates in Canva (or any editing app you use) for images that you will upload as idea pins (because you can use a combination of video and image content as idea pins). I usually do this so that the idea pins still stay on brand or prepare a cover image for the idea pins that I will share. You can check out the pre-made Canva templates I have created to help you create idea pins easily here.
