Five Social Media Trends to Watch Out for This 2021

A brand new year is here which means there will be new trends to watch out for. The beauty of social media is that it is always evolving. While this can be frustrating for some, a change in mindset will help to see it as an opportunity to be better.

This means that we have to keep our minds open for new social media trends and executions to try out. It can be hard to adapt at the get-go, but all that you need is to keep an open mind so you don’t get left behind.

It can be overwhelming at first to go through the dozens of trends that are out there. I tried limiting it to five trends first and what you can do about it for your business!

Five Trends To Watch Out For this 2021

Niche Platforms are Gaining Popularity

Here’s an interesting statistic: Did you know that in 2020, global time spent on TikTok increased by 210% vs 2019? With that in mind, there is a need to look again at the platform and see how you can maximize it for your brand. There’s another up and coming platform gaining momentum, Clubhouse. While this voice-based social platform is on an invite-only basis, for now, it’s interesting to note how much information one can get just by listening to discussions.

What this means for your business:

BE OPEN. Be open to trying out other platforms especially if your target market is using it. If you can't have your own page there, consider tapping influencers to help increase your awareness on those platforms.

Video content will reign supreme

In a study by Cisco, they shared that by 2022, 82% of all online content will be video content. This is not surprising as it is one of the easiest and most engaging types of content. Today, you can already see more video content being shared across platforms - and we can go back to the first statistic I shared (time spent on TikTok).

The question is, are you integrating video content to your content strategy?

What this means for your business:

INTEGRATE VIDEO INTO YOUR CONTENT STRATEGY. You have to start producing video content for your audience or else you'll get left behind. While it might be hard at first, you just have to set aside time to create at least one per week. It doesn’t have to be well-produced like the ones you see coming from big brands. If you’re an entrepreneur, you can start it off first with content featuring your product or what your service is all about - it can also be as simple as going on IG stories!

Stories are here to stay

In a 2019 report by TechCrunch, they shared that daily active users of stories across Facebook, Instagram, and Whatsapp is at 500 million. With consumers' attention span getting shorter, stories are a good way to reach and engage with them. You constantly show up which will make it easier for them to engage with you.

What this means for your business:

START SHARING STORIES. If you haven't yet, you're missing your chance in reaching and engaging with your followers. As an entrepreneur, IG stories will provide you with an avenue to show what happens behind the scenes or ask your followers to give you feedback. This will make your brand and your story more relatable.

Traditional platforms will still perform well

In Hootsuite's study, Instagram and Facebook are the top two platforms that businesses are looking into investing this 2021. While niche platforms are growing, we can't deny the fact that those two platforms still have the most reach.

What this means for your business:

REVIEW YOUR STRATEGY. Check your social strategy and identify which platforms worked well for you and which content gets the most engagement and conversion. It will always have to go back to knowing who your target audience is and identifying which platforms will be efficient in reaching them.

Influencer marketing will still rise this 2021

While influencer marketing is not a new trend, it is a hard fact that it is cheaper to invest in vs. running billboards or paid campaigns. With the current global situation, more brands will lean toward this strategy to save money while still getting results.

What this means for your business:

ENGAGE WITH INFLUENCERS. If it is a perfect fit for your brand, go for it. But also remember that your followers can become your influencers. They can help spread the word about you and your products when you focus on nurturing your relationship with them.
